At KOMAL, we invite you on an exciting journey of ideation, imagination, and execution through a myriad of designer jewellery! In this blog, we share our ethos, our love affair with the Lotus flower and how it serves as a muse for our creations that you can shop from our online jewellery store.

Philosophy for KOMALs designer jewellery in Pakistan

During her visit to Germany for Design management workshop and Schmuck Exhibition, our founder was particularly drawn to artisanal flair in modern jewellery manifesting in clean lines, use of few techniques, traditional craftsmanship and use of materials such as gold and silver with a subtle combination of gemstones. She was convinced that designer jewellery must be democratized without compromising on quality. As a result, our label caters to a diverse audience with options for both subdued and statement pieces. The philosophy of KOMALs designer jewellery in Pakistan is very simple: serve beautifully functional and versatile jewellery that is dipped in tradition, but soldered in contemporary lifestyle and pragmatism.

Kanwal – the muse for KOMALs designer pieces in Pakistan

Flowers have been a compelling influence for art and design and for KOMALs designer jewellery in Pakistan, we are smitten by the Lotus(called kanwal in Urdu) flower, a symbol of beauty, purity, and enlightenment for centuries. Komal, our Creative Lead, first professed her love for the flora during her jewellery art studies. She soon began to reference the history, research and relevance of her muse in her designer jewellery collections as a freelancer and student. When an arty bride expressed her interest in the Lotus motif for her bespoke bridal designer jewellery set, it sparked an even more impassioned exploration of the motif, also marking the humble beginnings of a brand whose name (komal) embodied the tenderness of the flower itself.

It would also be apt to say that our brand and designer jewellery is an ode to the spirit of the kanwal: it represents the ability to rise above adversity and find peace, even in difficult or murky circumstances. As a designer jewellery brand, this is a metaphor for our dedication to local craftsmanship, slow fashion and tradition, and affordability despite dwindling artisanship and proliferation of machine made jewellery in the national market.

Use of kanwal petal shapes in design

Considering the anatomy of our muse, the Lotus flower’s shape is often depicted with circular petals that fold inward, creating a bowl-like structure. The petals are often arranged in layers, with the outer petals being larger and more pronounced than the inner petals. This layered design gives the flower a sense of depth and dimensionality, and serves as a nuanced influence for our designer jewellery. See for instance our Totta earrings, where lotus petals have inspired the shapes that make up these gold plated earrings, which are embellished with gemstones. The bird and the flower evoke a sense of harmony and abundance. These pieces are out-of-the-box, carry a traditional charm and only give a discreet edge to your look.

Use of
kanwal structure in design

Next, at the center of the kanwal flower is a raised, cone-shaped structure known as the receptacle. This structure serves as the base for the flower’s reproductive organs, and is often topped with a round seed pod. The receptacle is also often decorated with intricate patterns and textures, which add to the flower’s overall visual interest, additionally interpreted in our designer jewellery in a multifaceted way. The texturized and embellished touch adds charm to everyday or partywear outfits.

Use of
kanwal colours in designer jewellery

In addition to its distinctive shape, the kanwal is also known for its feminine yet vibrant colors. While the flower is most commonly associated with shades of pink and white, it can also be found in a variety of other colors, including yellow, red, and blue. In our designer jewellery, however, we play more with the form of the flower and the use of colour is either minimal or a striking detail. See the pink and green detailing of the kanwal studs below:
